Depictions of death can evoke comfort, awe or even curiosity. Historically, there are numerous examples of this fascination, for example in Renaissance art, where vanitas depictions allude to the transience of life. In Romanticism, too, melancholic and sombre themes such as death and transience were seen as a source of beauty and sublimity.
