Located in the Bijlmer, Amsterdam, OBA NEXT Lab represents the future of libraries. Built in wooden modules, this library is trying to make a big impact on society and a small impact on the environment. It is not a traditional library, in the sense that this one is not filled with books and silent rooms.
Designed specifically for teenagers, this library offers a place where young people can learn to program, hack, and shape their own futures. With vibrant makerspaces and a learning hill filled with cozy nooks and plants, it is a space for creativity, exploration, and education. The library’s design also activates the previously empty square, transforming it into a hub for both learning and community engagement. A solar glass extension—reused from another building—acts as a “living room” for the neighborhood, creating a seamless connection between the square and the library’s indoor atrium.
