A Viking was generally tall and of a strong, muscular build, imposing and robust in appearance, with angular facial features, light eyes and red hair and a long, thick beard of the same color. His complexion was usually pale or lightly tanned. Vikings often wore warm clothing, especially in cold climates. They wore long, heavy tunics, made of wool or linen, which provided protection from wind and cold. Viking men also wore tight knee-length trousers and wool stockings, along with leather boots or similar footwear, which allowed them to walk long distances without compromising their grip. In addition to their functional clothing, the Vikings also adorned themselves with ornaments. They often wore wide, elaborate belts, often decorated with complex braided patterns or animal designs. In addition, they used silver or bronze brooches and buckles to fasten their clothing, adding a touch of elegance and style to their appearance. In battle, the Vikings used round shields made of wood covered with leather or metal, iron mail armor to protect their torso, and horned helmets, although this last feature is a popular myth that is not based on solid historical evidence. They also carried swords, battle axes and spears, which were their main combat weapons.
