Pages 2 & 3:
Text:
"Hi, my name is Katlego, but my mom calls me a bubbly bee. Let me tell you how it all began."
Animation:
Katlego, a young Black boy, bursts into the frame, full of energy, with playful, bouncy movements. His mom stands in the background, smiling warmly as she affectionately calls him her “bubbly bee.” Katlego’s lively personality shines through in his exaggerated, vibrant expressions.
Pages 4 & 5:
Text:
"It started on the last day of term 2 when my teacher, Miss Dlamini, called my mom in for a meeting. I really do not know what it was about. Could it have been because of my behavior? My name is always on the noise-makers list for the past 6 months, could it be that? I sometimes don’t finish my homework because I get easily distracted and do something else. Could it be that? My reading has not been as good as my other classmates. Maybe it’s that."
Animation:
Katlego sits at his desk, looking puzzled, with thought bubbles popping up around his head. The bubbles briefly show animated flashbacks: his name on the noise-makers list, getting distracted during homework, and struggling with reading. These scenes appear in a slightly dream-like animation within the 3D space, emphasizing his concern.
Pages 6 & 7:
Text:
"After the meeting, my mom said I need to see a special doctor, not the one that tests blood or does X-rays. She said it is the same doctor that my cousin Sipho has been going to. I wasn’t really paying attention, so I forgot what the doctor is called but I think it starts with an ‘S’. In class, Miss Dlamini always tells me how I don’t listen to her instructions, and that I interrupt the class a lot. Today she shouted at me a lot. 'Kat, why are you talking again? Why are your English textbooks still on your desk? Why are your sums incomplete?'"
Animation:
Katlego is at his desk with Miss Dlamini standing in front of him, looking stern. Katlego’s attention suddenly shifts to a blue bird outside the window, his face lighting up with excitement as he exclaims about the bird, completely forgetting about his unfinished sums. Miss Dlamini’s frustration is clearly shown, with her exaggerated Disney-esque reaction contrasting with Katlego’s innocent distraction.
Pages 8 & 9:
Text:
“'Ma’am, my sums are incomplete because… LOOK EVERYONE, A BLUE BIRD!' 'KATLEGO! Where are your sums?' 'I’m sorry Miss Dlamini, I was about to do them.'”
Pages 10 & 11:

"I could not focus, not at all… but Sihle couldn’t either, Sihle was just like me. I met Sihle at school, and I think he is really cool. We have a lot in common."
Animation:
In the school playground, Katlego and Sihle race each other, laughing. Katlego, the fastest, teases Sihle as they play tag with friends. The environment is bright, with warm lighting and lush, green grass, capturing the joy and movement in a fluid, dynamic 3D Disney-inspired animation.
Pages 12 & 13:
Text:
"I enjoy playing tag with Sihle, Sbo, Angel, and all our other friends. I am the fastest one, but Sihle thinks he is. I always laugh at him. Sihle and I try our best to remind each other about the things we need to do, but it is always hard for us to remember everything. We both get fidgety in class, but he reminds me that it’s okay and, in those moments, it feels like I can be less fidgety but the fidgety still doesn’t go away."
Animation:
In class, Katlego and Sihle fidget in their seats, with subtle, continuous movements like tapping feet and drumming fingers. They occasionally glance at each other and smile, silently reassuring each other that they’re not alone. The detailed, realistic classroom textures and soft lighting focus on their connection.
Pages 14 & 15:
Text:
"We always find ourselves in trouble. The more time we spend together, the more we get comfortable and get to open up to each other. I have always felt like I’m different from my friends but not Sihle, he understands me."
Animation:
The scene transitions to Katlego and Sihle sitting together during a break under a tree. Sihle explains ADHD to Katlego, and his words are illustrated with simple visuals—a fast-moving brain and a balloon representing deep breathing. These abstract elements blend smoothly into the 3D environment, with a slightly ethereal glow to emphasize the explanation.
Pages 16 & 17:
Text:
"Sihle told me that he has ADHD and that it is okay. He said he also had to see a special Dr and that it is not scary."
Pages 18 & 19:
Text:
"After school, I couldn’t wait to tell my mom about my day! 'Mom! I met a friend named Sihle, and he helps me feel better about being different!' Sihle told me he has something called ADHD, which means his brain works a little differently. Which makes it hard for him to focus, sit still, and follow instructions."
Animation:
Katlego excitedly runs up to his mom after school, his face bright with enthusiasm. He animatedly recounts his day, particularly his conversation with Sihle. His mom listens attentively, her expression soft and supportive, with a soft glow around her similar to Disney’s “Moana.”
Pages 20 & 21:
Text:
"He told me that sometimes he feels like his thoughts are racing, making it tricky to pay attention to do one thing for too long. But Sihle has some cool tricks to help him cope. 'Deep breathing helps slow down my racing thoughts,' he said. 'It’s like filling up a balloon and letting it float away!' Sihle suggested breaking our homework into smaller parts, like a treasure hunt! 'Instead of feeling overwhelmed, we can do one small task at a time,' he explained. 'It makes it feel like a game!'"
Animation:
As Katlego describes what Sihle told him, the scene shifts to Sihle demonstrating deep breathing by inflating an imaginary balloon and letting it float away. Then, they’re shown treating homework like a treasure hunt, with animated maps and small rewards for each task. The treasure hunt scene has a whimsical, adventurous feel, with vibrant colors akin to Disney’s “Inside Out.”
Pages 22 & 23:
Text:
"My mom hugged me tight and said, 'It’s wonderful to have friends who understand you, my bubbly bee. Remember, everyone is unique in their own special way, just like the colors in a rainbow!'"
Pages 24 & 25:
Text:
"And so, I learned that being different is okay. With friends like Sihle, I can be myself, and together we can create our own adventures."
Animation:
Katlego and Sihle stand together, confidently facing a new day at school. The background is filled with vibrant, swirling colors, symbolizing their unique “superpowers.” They high-five each other, smiling brightly, in a bright, celebratory 3D animation with dynamic lighting, reminiscent of Disney’s “Encanto.”
Pages 26 & 27:
Text:
"We practice our Focus Plan, take breaks to stretch and move, and remind each other to breathe deeply when things feel overwhelming. Together, we can face any challenge, one deep breath at a time, and turn our differences into superpowers!"
Animation:
The boys are shown in class, calmly executing their Focus Plan. They take deep breaths, do stretches, and methodically check off tasks on a list. The classroom environment is calm and orderly, with smooth, serene animation focusing on the boys’ calm and focus, similar to the soothing scenes in “Frozen.”
